Yes. Though no roof is designed for pedestrian traffic. Caution should be taken not to walk on the rib portions, but to do so on the front edges; otherwise you may walk on your new Gerard roof with ease.

How heavy is a Gerard Roof?
Gerard roofs weigh only 140 lbs. per square, which is seven times lighter than most clay or concrete tiles. They weigh 95 lbs. lighter than inexpensive composition shingles, and are far more durable.

How noisy is a Gerard roof?
Due to the patented interlocking design, insulated dead-air space under the roof, and the earth-stone granule finish, Gerard roofs are very quiet.

Do I have to tear off my existing roof?
No. With Gerard roofs you may leave your old wood shingle or shake roof on as Gerard has been tested and approved to be installed directly over your existing roof due to its unique installation method. You should check with your local city however, as each city has different ordinances.

What is the warranty on Gerard roofs?
The warranties are different for the different types of Gerard roofs. If you go to the individual Gerard roofs links at the upper left of this window, there are links to each Gerard roof warranty information on the website at

Won't Gerard roofs make my home hotter?
Again, due to the insulated "dead-air" space, there is no heat gain. Much like dual-pane windows, the design actually works as an energy-saving barrier.

Will heat and cold make a Gerard roof contract and expand?
There is minimal movement with Gerard roofs due to the fully interlocking profile when affixed to the batten. Also, the rough granule finish and angular design add to restricting movement.

Will I have to re-structure my home?
No. Because of its light weight, Gerard roofs require no sub-structure reinforcement.

What fire rating does Gerard roofs have?
Depending on sub-roofs and underlayment, Gerard offers a Class A, B, or C installation. (ICBO and UL reports are available upon request).

Will my Gerard roof be safe from lightening?
Fear of lightening is not a concern, as through the installation, the steel roof is grounded to existing pipe vents.

Will the exposed fasteners rust or come loose?
Because the nails which are used for fastening are specially coated and installed at an angle to the wood batten, they won't rust or come loose in bad weather.

How long has Gerard roofs been around?
Gerard roofs have been used in over 30 countries around the world for more than 25 years, and have beautifully withstood all weather climates.

Will the coating ever crack, chip or peel?
With Gerard's superior technology in acrylic resins and curing process, we guarantee that your Gerard roof will last as it has lasted all over the world.

Will the value of my home increase if I install a Gerard roof?
Yes. Gerard not only offers you security and peace-of-mind with the last roof you may ever purchase, it also will enhance the beauty and help increase the value of your home. Gerard roof warranties are transferable.

Does hail cause any damage to a Gerard roof?
Gerard roofs have been tested around the world with "flying colors" results in resisting hail, rain, snow, and ice. (reports of test are available upon request).

Will I save on my energy bills?
You should see a noticeable reduction in your energy bills. Because of the Gerard system design, temperatures in the attic can be 30 to 40 degrees cooler.

Why are metal roofs safer in an earthquake?
They're much lighter. Gerard is about 1/8 the weight of a concrete or clay tile installation. So, during a temblor, there's far less load on the structure, reducing the likelihood of structural damage and personal injury. Also, a metal roof actually adds strength to your structure. It provides twice the shear strength of 1/2 CDX plywood.

Why is wind resistance so important?
Even if you don't live in tornado or hurricane country, standing up to wind is very important. High velocity winds caused by firestorms can blow burning embers. High winds will cause most roofing to blow off or in the case of concrete or clay tile to rise in the front allowing the embers to blow under the roof. Gerard's secured with four penny nails in the front. No flying embers can pass under a Gerard roof.

How long will a metal roof last?
It could easily outlast your home - 50 to 75 years is not an unrealistic estimate.

Where are Gerard roofs made?
Gerard roofs are manufactured in several countries, but for the American market we produce Gerard roofs with 100% American materials and labor. Our manufacturing plants are located in Southern California and Texas.

Will my homeowner’s insurance premium be reduced if I install a Gerard roof?
Discounts are offered by many insurance companies. They all have different policies and it is best if you call them and compare.
